BIRDWATCHING IN ESPÍRITO SANTO

What is Birdwatching?

?

Birdwatching (Birding) is a sustainable activity with the goal to observe birds in their natural habitat, without disturbing their behavior or environment. Birdwatching can be practiced by anyone, with children, by the elderly, in groups or individually. It's fun, exciting, encourages walking and to have more contact with nature.

Birdwatching has been around for a very long time, ever since we started to be interested in the behavior of other beings. It is quite famous in the United States and Europe as a hobby. Some countries even have very good infrastructure (e.g. trails, signs, guides) in national parks. Here in Brazil, birdwatching is a new phenomenon. Lots of birding clubs start to emerge and spread across the country. Birdwatching has lots of advantages, including (1) the development of sustainable tourism and the conservation of species in their habitat; (2) awareness raising and environmental education; (3) the collection of scientific data; (4) sustainable development; (5) additional sources of income for local communities; (6) growth of hotel and tourism sectors.

What do I need to practice Birdwatching?

To watch birds, all you need are your eyes. Some of our colleagues are even able to watch birds in a wheelchair. All you need is passion.

However, there is some equipment that helps with the ultimate birding experience. "Bird Watching", despite its name, is not restricted to passive observation. The search, photography, videography, sound recording, species identification and behaviour, play a big part in the overall experience.

COAs (Clube de Observação de Aves) - Birding Clubs

COAs journey, a Brazilian birding club, began in the mid 1980s. The first COA was founded in São Leopoldo/RS. Subsequently, other clubs started to emerge all over Brazil. COA of Rio de Janeiro, founded in 1985, stands out among the others because it had a big influence on the whole movement. Famous ornithologists like José Fernando Pacheco and others came from this club. Master "Her. Sick" (Helmut Sick), author of some of our our most prestigious work on birds, was frequently present at the meetings. Until 1991, the year of his death, Sick participated in meetings of the Rio COA with both, old and young birdwatchers.

Basically all COAs have the same goals: the study, observation and appreciation of birds. As digital photography equipment became more affordable in the 1990s, new birdwatchers arose, which led to the further popularization of COAs. Birding Clubs welcome not only for bird lovers, but all people who are interested in contact with nature, or who want to meet like-minded friends. Thanks to birding clubs, the conservation of birds and wildlife gained thousands of new "soldiers", young and passionate advocates!

Many COAs are organized and schedule social activities and observation trips in advance. These scheduled activities help with the development of qualified articles and teach the most inexperienced newcomers how to identify birds.
Here in Espírito Santo, COA started in 2010. Birdwatchers who did not know each other started to meet and organize field trips to watch birds. 'Our' COA is not formalized, like some other national COAs, but we have passionate birdwatchers and very good photographers! Finding and photographing some rare species made our COA 'famous'. We appeared in the press, which caused many new birdwatchers to join our club. On the internet you can find interesting information about our group's activities.

From our point of view, COAs play an important role in raising ecological awareness, educating communities with lack of environmental sense, and are important for the conservation of bird species. In countries like the US, registered birdwatchers even participate in the annual census of bird populations. This would be a very important scientific contribution to the study of fluctuating populations in our country.
